Dear Friends,

As you read through this edition of Overture, you might notice a striking number of women featured in our pages: violinist Leila Josefowicz, cellist Alisa

Weilerstein, pianist Katherine Jacobson, composer Jennifer Higdon, guest conductor Rei Hotoda and of course, Marin

Alsop. In this issue, we pay tribute to women who are making a difference in the performing arts world—as conductors, musicians, soloists, composers, and even fundraisers. After generations of being a largely male-dominated industry, today’s symphony orchestras now feature women in large numbers on the podium, in the board room, as executives, and on stage as musicians. Maestra Alsop’s mentorship of rising young female conductors like Rei Hotoda, the 2006 Taki Concordia Fellow, breaks new ground for the next generation of musicians.

By now surely all of Baltimore has heard the buzz about the exciting programs our incoming music director Marin Alsop has in store for her inaugural season, beginning in September. The BSO will perform the complete Beethoven symphony cycle for the first time in a single season, paired with works by 11 of today’s most acclaimed composers, each of whom will discuss the creative process in a new series entitled Composers in Conversation. As of the beginning of April, new and existing donors have generously risen to the Meyerhoff Family Challenge and we have already reached halfway to our goal of $1 million. And thanks to the generosity of PNC, all subscription seats for the entire 2007-2008 season have been reduced to $25. This unprecedented offer coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, making this a season you will not want to miss. We hope you will take advantage of this remarkable offer and join us for the BSO’s landmark season.

The Joseph and Harvey Meyerhoff Family Challenge
PUSHING THE LIMITS

The Challenge has two main objectives designed to help the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra achieve its programmatic initiatives: 1) motivate new donors to join the BSO family and 2) increase the number of donors at the $5,000 level and above.

You can help the Symphony push the limits:
Make a first time gift of at least $5,000 to the BSO
Increase your annual giving by at least $5,000
Double your gift if you are a donor between $2,500 and $5,000
